Human-Hair Wigs vs. Halloween Costume Wigs

October 5, 2023

All wigs are not created equal. Some wigs—like synthetic wigs for Halloween, holidays and events—are fun but may be mid-to-low quality because they are only meant to be used as a temporary costume. When a child is experiencing hair loss from cancer, alopecia or another medical condition, a real human-hair wig is an excellent solution.

Natural wigs made of human hair can help children with hair loss increase their sense of confidence and self-esteem. At Wigs For Kids, our mission is to help children look and feel themselves by providing human-hair replacement systems, or ponytail wigs, free of charge.

Human Hair Wigs: A Natural Solution for Children in Need

When a child loses their hair, it can be distressing for the whole family. Medical conditions like alopecia areata, trichotillomania, and cancer can all lead to hair loss in children. Though the child should be focused on staying positive and healthy during a stressful time, he or she may feel anxious or depressed about their hair loss.

Thanks to donated ponytails and financial donations, our human-hair wigs can help children regain their sense of self. The cost of one hair replacement system is $1,800, but Wigs For Kids never charges the family in need. Donated funds help cover the expense of creating free wigs for cancer patients, as well as help us pay for products, services, and support.

Why real human hair?

Wigs crafted from real human hair have a special quality that costume wigs don’t have. Human-hair wigs look and feel natural, soft, and durable. Hair must meet rigorous selection and quality standards to be used for a wig or hair replacement system—such as meeting the minimum length requirement and being undyed, highlighted, and not chemically treated.

Prioritizing comfort and customization

Human-hair wigs for children are made with care and precision to ensure maximum comfort and longevity. The inside of a real wig features breathable material to reduce itching and rubbing during physical activities like sports and workouts. Human-hair wigs also offer many opportunities for customization based on the aesthetic of the wearer, who may opt to cut and style their wig to suit their unique look.

How Wigs For Kids Helps Children with Cancer and Alopecia

Wigs For Kids is a nonprofit organization that helps children experiencing hair loss stemming
from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns, and other medical
causes. Stylists and regular people just like you work together to give recipients the self-esteem
and self-image they deserve.

“Children shouldn’t have to worry about how they look, especially when they’re in the middle of a
health crisis. We want to give these kids the opportunity to feel good about themselves again.”
~ Jeffrey Paul, certified cosmetic therapist and founder of Wigs For Kids

Wigs For Kids provides a range of colors based on the available inventory of donated hair that our manufacturers have at a particular time. Recipients may select a hair color from a range that is the closest match to their required color. Stylists also help recipients ensure a hairpiece fits properly, while cutting and styling the wig as desired.

The emotional impact of hair loss

Hair loss can have a debilitating effect on people, especially children. Children with hair loss often feel like they’ve lost their sense of self, and they may look in the mirror and not understand what they see.  In addition to impacting self-esteem, hair loss in children can also lead to social anxiety, with children worried about being accepted by their friends or being able to participate in activities they love.

Restoring confidence and joy

Wigs For Kids has helped many children regain their confidence after receiving a hair replacement system. Get to know some of our recipients and see the profound impact a real human-hair wig has had on their lives.

  • Kaydence: Along with her Certified Service Provider Chad Keast, Kaydence appeared on stage at America’s Beauty Show to debut her beautiful hair replacement system.
  • Alaina: Hair-pulling, or trichotillomania, is a serious condition that can lead to baldness. See how Alaina is gaining confidence and peace every day with her new wig.

Embracing Fun with Halloween Costume Wigs

Each year, Halloween costumes make October 31 a spooky, fun-filled night for children and adults. Some costumes may require a wig to complete the outfit—and this is where artificial wigs come in handy. Unlike real human-hair wigs, wigs for kids’ costumes are ideal for dressing up on holidays like Halloween and for theatrical performances because they are a low-cost way to have fun.

  1. Material: Typically, costume wigs are made from synthetic fibers. These fibers try to mimic human hair but lack the natural look and feel, and they vary in quality or have a noticeable plastic shine.
  2. Appearance: Costume wigs often lack the realistic appearance of human hair wigs. They may be colorful or cut into zany hairstyles.
  3. Standard Sizing: Since they are generally mass-produced, costume wigs for Halloween come in standard sizes and might not fit everyone perfectly.
  4. Durability: Synthetic wigs are not made to last as long as human-hair wigs. It’s also not recommended to style costume wigs with hot tools, as the synthetic fibers can be sensitive to heat.
  5. Comfort: Costume wigs may not always be comfortable for prolonged wear but can usually be worn for a few hours without great discomfort.
