When faced with a challenge, it is up to us to decide how we face it. For 7-year-old Lacey Baskin, this challenge was facing the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Lacey was diagnosed with this illness at a young age. However, this did not stop her from enjoying her life. Lacey enjoys the warm weather and playing hide-and-go-seek. Her favorite thing to do is going down the slides on the playground with her best friend. She also enjoys going to school and learning. Throughout her journey, Lacey remembers to enjoy life, no matter what challenge she is facing.
Lacey’s mom Jessica Baskin heard about Wigs for Kids through a child life specialist. When Lacey received her wig, Jessica was grateful and said “We were so thankful that Wigs for Kids took the time to make us a wig with no price. The wig was so beautiful and the people at the salon were so kind to us.”
The hairpiece was made with much care from hair stylist Rachel McElvaney. Rachel took the time to enhance the beauty of the wig and provide the correct measurements of the wig for Lacey. Rachel’s hard work and effort allowed us to provide Lacey with a beautiful hairpiece.
Right after receiving her hair system, Lacey remembers visiting the playground where she had fun and ran around. She was excited to look and feel like herself once again.
When reflecting on Lacey’s journey, Jessica noticed how strong of a person Lacey had become at the age of 7. She and her family learned not to dwell on the negative and to keep your head up, regardless of the challenges you may face. As for Lacey, her confidence was regained to the point where she wouldn’t mind going to school without a wig or hat.
Lacey received her wig right before her uncle’s wedding, where she was a flower girl. Because of Wigs for Kids, she had the choice to wear a wig. In the end, she decided not to because it was in Florida and the temperature was relatively high. In addition, Lacey had to courage to be a flower girl without her wig, especially in front of people she did not know. But having the choice to wear a wig made it so much easier for her.
Jessica knows that as Lacey continues to grow, she will be so much stronger for her experience. When Lacey was asked what she would say to other kids struggling with hair loss she said, “continue to live and enjoy your life no matter what.”
