Alicia, a recipient of Wigs for Kids, struggled with trichotillomania from the young age of 5. This disorder causes an individual to pull their hair out. Alicia didn’t realize at her young age that pulling her hair out was not a natural occurrence. She began to experience more and more hair loss.
The next few years became a real struggle for Alicia. She became a victim of bullying in school. Throughout her journey with trichotillomania she found inner strength in herself and mother, who also had dealt with trichotillomania.
At 13 years of age, she became aware of Wigs for Kids, and when she received her first wig, she described it as life-changing. She shared that she was enjoyed styling her hair the way she wanted to and that she regained her confidence to live her life feeling beautiful inside and out.
Now at the age of 18, Alicia has fully recovered from trichotillomania. When asked for words of advice to others, she shared “I know how hard it is because I struggled with it myself. Even though it’s hard to not give up, even when you want to. It may be hard now, but it will get better.”
