At Wigs For Kids, every child’s journey is unique, but they all share one thing in common: courage. For 14-year-old Desiree, that courage shines through in her resilience, her positivity, and her understanding that beauty comes from within.
Desiree is a ninth-grade student who loves science, basketball, and spending time with the people who matter most, like her Dad. Like many teens, she enjoys watching TikTok, listening to her favorite artists, and practicing hairstyling. But behind her bright personality is a challenge no child should have to face alone: hair loss.
In May of 2025, Desiree was diagnosed with Lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease that can cause swelling and pain throughout the body, including the scalp, which can impact hair growth.
Desiree describes her experience with hair loss as “hard,” sharing that it has made her feel sad at times. Yet even in those difficult moments, her self-awareness and strength stand out.
“It’s just hair, and I know I am beautiful.” – Desiree
Still, like many young people, Desiree hoped for a sense of normalcy and the chance to feel confident walking into school and blending in with her peers. While she was waiting for her hairpiece to be created, she shared that what she looked forward to most was “to be normal again and to look like the other girls in school.”
That’s where the Wigs For Kids mission becomes deeply meaningful. Our work focuses on not just providing hair, but restoring confidence, dignity, identity, and joy.
Behind every life-changing hairpiece is a dedicated stylist who brings both skill and heart to the process. For Desiree, that stylist was Britney Jones, a Certified Service Provider (CSP) and founder of Bennett Beauty Solutions. CSPs are professional stylists who volunteer their time and talents to guide families through the process of ordering, styling, and maintaining each hairpiece.
With over 11 years of stylist experience and a specialization in hair loss and alopecia, Britney is deeply committed to helping clients feel comfortable and confident. Her passion for working with individuals experiencing hair loss inspired her to extend her care to children through Wigs For Kids, a decision she describes as an honor.
Britney approaches each child with personalized attention, carefully selecting styles by referencing photos and existing hair, ensuring that every hairpiece feels natural and uniquely suited to the recipient.
Recipients like Desiree are eligible to receive a new wig each year, completely free-of-charge to the family, allowing them to express their individual style with a new look each year. This opportunity provides kids the power to choose how they present themselves to the world, and this is only possible because of generous giving from our hair and financial donors.
For Desiree and her family, the impact of this experience was immediate and powerful. After receiving her made-to-order, free-of-charge hairpiece, Desiree’s mom shared a heartfelt reflection, “Thank you for the experience — my daughter hasn’t smiled this big in a while! Stylist Britney was a blessing from start to finish. She listened to my daughter, she was funny and compassionate. We really do appreciate her talent and willingness to do this for us.”
Moments like these reflect the heart of Wigs For Kids: where medical need meets compassionate care, and where dedicated volunteers like Britney create lasting impact.
Desiree’s story is about more than hair. It’s about navigating a life-changing diagnosis, finding support at the right time, and rediscovering confidence.
It’s about a teenager whose favorite color is purple, loves chicken nuggets and basketball, and who faced the emotional weight of hair loss with honesty and strength, and now has the confidence to walk forward feeling like herself again.
Because of fundraisers, hair donors, volunteer stylists, and community advocates, children like Desiree receive more than a hairpiece — they receive confidence, dignity, and hope.
Stories like Desiree’s are only possible because of a community that believes no child should face hair loss alone.
Whether you donate hair, support our program financially, or partner with us as a stylist, you become part of a child’s journey toward confidence and self‑acceptance.
