Four-year-old Cecilia, affectionately known as Cece, is getting ready for a big milestone: starting preschool! She loves playing dress-up, coloring and painting, swimming, and watching the movie Frozen. Her favorite treat is ice cream, and one of the things that makes her smile is spending time outside playing with her family.
Like a lot of little Frozen fans, Cece loves Elsa and her beautiful long braid.
For Cece, growing hair long enough for a braid isn’t so simple. She has Short Anagen Syndrome with nonspecific alopecia that affects the growth of her hair. Her family has spent more than a year navigating the questions, uncertainty, and emotions that can come with childhood hair loss.
As Cece has gotten older, she’s started to ask questions of her own. She’s wondered why she doesn’t have long hair like other little girls, and has expressed a wish to have long hair that she could wear in a braid like Elsa.
Even when they didn’t have all the answers for Cece, her parents wanted to make sure she always had something important: a choice.
Her mom Rachel shared, “I’m proud of Matthew and myself for being able to provide Cecilia with a choice in something she now has some control over. She has the love and support of her family as we continue to show her just how incredible and beautiful she is, long hair or not.”
Through Wigs For Kids, Cece received a one-of-a-kind hairpiece made just for her. Wigs For Kids provides specially designed hairpieces made to be both comfortable and durable for active kiddos. These hairpieces are always provided at no cost to the recipient families, thanks to the generosity of hair and financial donors.
Cece’s journey also inspired another special connection.
After a family friend introduced them to stylist Megan Kurtz of InTouch Salon, Megan generously stepped up to become a Wigs For Kids volunteer stylist to support Cece. That meant Cece was able to have her hairpiece styling appointment much closer to home, rather than requiring her family to travel over an hour away for her appointments.
The experience was meaningful for stylist Megan, too.
After styling Cece’s new hair, Megan shared how special it was to give a child the opportunity to have the long hair she couldn’t grow on her own. Just as importantly, Megan emphasized that Cece didn’t need long hair to shine. Now, she simply has more choices: short hair, long hair, a braid, curls, or whatever style she decides she wants to wear.
Judging from their appointment, there may be plenty of styling adventures ahead.
“We had so much fun styling and playing with this little lady’s new hair,” Megan shared, “She made my day and I think I made hers too.”
Cece’s Wigs For Kids story doesn’t end with her hairpiece.
Her aunt, Kelsey, decided to donate her own hair to Wigs For Kids, extending the kindness Cece’s family experienced to support another child facing medical hair loss.
This donation beautifully reflects how the Wigs For Kids community works. Hair donors, financial supporters, families and volunteer stylists each contribute something different, but together they make it possible for children like Cece to receive specially designed hairpieces at no cost to their families.
Cece’s family understands the hairpiece isn’t about changing who their little girl is; it’s about giving her options. They will walk with Cece on her hair loss journey, supporting her choices and reminding her how incredible and beautiful she is, whether she chooses long hair or not.
Because if you’ve met Cece, her mom says, you already know something important:
“You know just how much she shines.“
Now, whether she’s coloring, swimming, playing with her family, or heading off to pre-school, Cece gets to decide how she’d like that shine to look each day.
Stories like Cece’s are only possible because of a community who believes no child should face hair loss alone.
