Wigs For Kids is proud to spotlight Lisa Hyde, owner of LH Hair in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lisa has volunteered with Wigs For Kids for about 10 years, using her extensive experience in hair loss and hair replacement to support children and families through their hair loss journeys.
Since joining our program, Lisa has helped at least 25 Wigs For Kids recipient families, generously sharing her time, talent and expertise to help children get measured for, receive, and maintain their free-of-charge hairpieces.
Lisa began her career as a salon stylist in 1983. By the early 90s, her work shifted toward what would soon become her passion: helping people experiencing hair loss and scalp health concerns.
Today, her work at LH Hair includes non-surgical hair replacements and trichology, along with other personalized hair and scalp solutions. Her salon’s approach emphasizes privacy, personalized attention, and helping clients find solutions that look natural and best fit their individual needs.
Throughout her career, Lisa has seen firsthand how challenging hair loss can be.
She describes the hair loss journey as one that can be filled with anxiety and can have a profound effect on a person’s confidence. That sentiment has been shared with us by many of our recipient families. Lisa’s understanding of this issue is a big part of why she loves the work that she does.
“I love helping people regain their confidence,” Lisa shares.
Lisa’s work includes working with adults and children with different forms of hair loss, including from cancer treatments, alopecia and trichotillomania.
For Lisa, every client is more than an appointment. Building trust, maintaining privacy, and creating a comfortable environment are important parts of the experience.
That philosophy extends throughout LH Hair. Lisa says, “Our studio is very private and all of our clients become family.”
Lisa’s journey with Wigs For Kids started with a phone call. Levine Cancer Institute contacted Lisa while trying to find a stylist who could help a young patient. Lisa was honored to provide support to that family, stepping up when she learned about the need. That experience brought Lisa to work with Wigs For Kids.
Since then, Lisa has supported at least 25 Wigs For Kids recipient families, sharing her time and expertise.
Wigs For Kids provides made-to-order hairpieces at no cost to applicant families experiencing medical hair loss. Skilled volunteer stylists like Lisa are a vital part of the process, working dirctly with families to help ensure each child’s hairpiece is properly fitted and styled for them.
Lisa’s decades of experience working specifically with hair loss makes her a wonderful resource for the families she serves.
Recent recipient Liana’s mother shared, “Thank you to the best team for helping Liana out when she missed her hair. Ms. Lisa and her hairstylist team did the best job with the wig and asking Liana all the details she wants in the wig with color, length, and style. All was just so perfect.”
Lisa doesn’t shy away from acknowledging that working with families experiencing hair loss can be emotional.
Some children arrive while coping with serious health concerns. Others may be experiencing anxiety surrounding their hair loss. No matter what brough a family through her door, Lisa sees an opportunity to use her professional skills to make the journey a little easier.
“It’s overwhelming how it feels to help them get through their hardest journey. As sad as it is to see some of them so sick or anxiety ridden, it is an amazing way to give back all the things we’ve been gifted in life,” Lisa shares.
It’s that willingness to be there for families during difficult moments that makes volunteer styulists like Lisa such an important part of the Wigs For Kids family.
Lisa opened LH Hair in November of 2007, a decision she calls, “the best thing I could have ever done.” Opening her own studio allowed her to pursue new opportunities, including expanding into trichology and becoming involved with Wigs For Kids.
Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, LH Hair specializes in personalized hair restoration and enhancement solutions. The studio provides private consultations and works with individuals experiencing thinning hair, hair loss, and scalp concerns.
The salon’s emphasis on individualized, compassionate care makes Lisa’s partnership with Wigs For Kids a natural fit.
After years of working with Wigs For Kids families, Lisa enthusiastically encourages other stylists to consider volunteering their talents.
With families reaching out for support all across the US and Canada, we are always in need of caring stylists to share their talents. With all the ups and downs of a pediatric hair loss journey, having a trained stylist close to home can make the journey a little easier.
When asked to sum up what working with Wigs For Kids has meant to her, Lisa shared:
“One of the best things to ever open its door to me. Helping the children will give you the greatest joy in life.”
