Finding Confidence and a New Look: Nyla’s Story

November 4, 2026

11-year-old Nyla loves being active. She enjoys riding her bike and is learning how to rollerskate. When it’s time to relax, you might find her snacking on Hot Fries while playing a game of Sorry. She enjoys the simple joys in life, like when her friends are nice to her, or when her Dad picks her up.

Nyla also has someone very special she looks up to: her mom. When asked who inspires her and why, Nyla shared that her mom shows her how to be confident with the burn scars they both share.

That confidence hasn’t always come easy.

Nyla shared that kids at school sometimes stare at her, and she has noticed adults staring and whispering when she is out in stores. When asked what she was most looking forward to about receiving her Wigs For Kids hairpiece, Nyla shared a heartfelt wish, “Feeling like I look like everyone else.”

Wigs For Kids recipient Nyla is wearing a red T-shirt and a seatbelt and sits in the front passenger seat of a car. She has very short hair and visible facial scarring. Trees and a blue sky are visible through the car window in the background. The image is taken from inside the vehicle during daylight.

Behind them is a colorful wall mural featuring large flowers in shades of pink, orange, purple, and yellow. In the foreground, an open box with her Wigs For Kids hairpiece and a handbag sit on a table, while another person holds a smartphone that appears to be taking a photo or video of the moment.

Through the Wigs For Kids Recipient Program, Nyla was paired with volunteer stylist Kimberly Sporing of Hair By Kimberly in Lexington, Kentucky. Kimberly brings more than 30 years of experience as a stylist specializing in hair replacement. At her salon, she provides a private environment for people experiencing hair loss, with solutions designed to make her clients feel confident and cared for.

For our recipient families, a volunteer stylist plays a vital role in a child’s hair loss journey. Their relationship can help create a supportive space for a child and family as they navigate a very personal experience. Together, they discuss the child’s hair loss journey and determine what options will help the child look and feel their best. After the hairpiece is created, the stylist helps style and shape the hairpiece to create the desired look, and shares tips to keep her hairpiece looking its best wear after wear.

In the background, multiple wig and hairpiece samples are displayed on the salon wall above cabinets and styling supplies. Hair clippings are visible on the floor around the chair, highlighting the active styling session.

For Nyla, these special appointments were a success.

Following their styling appointment, Nyla’s mom shared a message that said it all:

“It went wonderfully! Thank you so much!”

For an 11-year-old who has experienced people staring at her because she looks different, a new hairpiece can represent much more than a new hairstyle. It can be one more way to step out into the world feeling comfortable, confident, and ready to focus on the things that matter most, like friends, family, bike rides, and mastering those roller skates.

Thanks to the generosity of hair donors, financial supporters, and volunteer stylists, kids like Nyla can feel comfortable, confident, and like “everyone else,” and always at no cost to the family served.

Colorful “All About Me” poster for Nyla, age 11. The poster includes a photo of a child and information about interests and family. Text states: “My Name: Nyla,” “Birthday: October 15,” and “Age: 11.” A family section says Nyla has an older brother, Braylen, and a younger brother, Levi, and looks up to their mom because the mom teaches confidence. Favorite things listed are Hot Fries, the game Sorry!, basketball, and watching Dhar Mann on YouTube. A hobbies section says Nyla loves riding a bike and is learning to rollerskate. Another section says Nyla smiles when their dad picks them up. Decorative illustrations include a roller skate, bicycle rider, bag of Hot Fries, Sorry! game board, basketball character, and a “Dad” hat. At the bottom, a message explains that Nyla has hair loss and scarring from a burn and that receiving a hairpiece helped Nyla feel like everyone else. The poster thanks supporters and includes a Wigs For Kids QR code.
