Stories of Hair, Hope, and Giving

Welcome to Community Roots, where we celebrate the heart of our missionyou. From generous hair donors and caring stylists to dedicated partners and inspiring recipients, this space is dedicated to the stories that remind us how powerful community can be. This spring, we’re honoring the many ways people come together to support children experiencing medical hair loss.

Pedal Into Purpose with Pelotonia

Team Huntington Bank is hosting their second Pelotonia Kids Ride, building on the incredible success of their inaugural event. Last year, nearly 300 young riders came together and raised more than $31,000 to support pediatric cancer research — all fueled by a shared determination to end cancer.

If you’re in the Columbus area, families are invited to ride for a powerful cause and learn more about how organizations like Wigs For Kids support children during and after treatment. We’re proud to be onsite sharing our mission and the stories of the children we are honored to serve.

When a Teacher Steps Up, Students Rise

Two side‑by‑side photos showing a dramatic hair change. The first image highlights long hair styled into multiple tight braids, evenly sectioned and secured along the length. The second image shows the same person with a freshly shaved head, standing close and embracing a uniformed law enforcement officer, emphasizing confidence and embracing the transformation.

While fundraising for a school trip to Washington, D.C., Danielle challenged herself to do something extraordinary. If she reached her financial goal, she committed to shaving 14 inches of her hair and donating it to Wigs For Kids.

This wasn’t her first time stepping up for others. Years earlier, Danielle shaved her head in solidarity with a student facing cancer. This time, she was surrounded by support — from her school community, her cousin Officer McKinley, and her stylist — turning one haircut into a powerful act of service.

We are deeply grateful to educators like Danielle who lead by example and show students what compassion looks like in action.

Recipient Spotlight: Kayleigh Shines at Prom

Kayleigh before prom, wearing a softly curled wig, shoulder‑length hair styled in loose ringlets with a decorative hairpiece woven into the side. The hairstyle frames the shoulders and complements a formal dress, capturing a polished pre‑prom look.

Kayleigh is an honor roll student who loves volleyball and spending time with friends. In 2024, she underwent brain surgery to remove a tumor, a life-changing experience that included losing her hair.

Through the Wigs For Kids Recipient Program, Kayleigh received a gorgeous hand-tied hairpiece made from donated hair — at no cost to her family. With the help of stylist Ginny Folden of Aspire Salon Suites, her hairpiece was carefully measured, fitted, and styled.

When Kayleigh attended prom, she didn’t just look stunning — she felt confident, joyful, and like herself again. Moments like these are why donors, stylists, and supporters matter so deeply.

Making a Difference, Inch by Inch

Penn State THON 2026 showing a live on‑stage hair‑cutting event. Hair donors and professional stylists are featured cutting and holding donated hair, with text highlighting ‘528 inches donated.’ Logos for Penn State THON, Wigs for Kids, Changing Times Hair Designs, and Night & Day Salon & Spa Aveda appear alongside images of the event and hair donation captains.

During THON Weekend, generosity took center stage as 45 donors stepped forward to donate a combined 528 inches of hair live on stage — streamed online for supporters everywhere to witness the impact in real time.

With support from certified salons and dedicated student leaders, these donations represent more than hair. They represent hope, solidarity, and a community choosing to support children facing some of life’s toughest challenges.

Hair donations like these help us continue crafting life-changing wigs for kids — but financial support is what makes this work possible from start to finish.

Three Years of Heart at Vibe Salon

For the third year in a row, Vibe Salon brought their community together in support of children experiencing medical hair loss. Through their time, talent, and dedication, they’ve helped raise awareness and funds — and shown what long-term commitment to giving looks like.

We are incredibly thankful for salons like Vibe, whose passion and leadership help children feel like themselves again. Inspired by their impact? Hosting a fundraiser is a powerful way to get involved and support even more families.

Rooted in Community

Every story shared here — every donation, haircut, event, and partnership — is part of something bigger. Community Roots is proof that when people lead with kindness, generosity grows.

Thank you for being part of this mission and for helping children look like themselves and live their lives.

Your Support Matters

While hair donations make confidence-boosting hairpieces possible, financial contributions are equally critical. Monetary donations help fund the meticulous creation of each hairpiece, cover materials and production costs, and ensure that children receive their hairpiece at no cost to their families. For many children facing medical hair loss, this support provides comfort, confidence, and a sense of normalcy when they need it most.

By choosing to give, whether through hair, financial support, or both, you help ensure that more children get to experience hope, joy, and confidence.

At Wigs For Kids, we are honored to witness stories like these — where caring individuals come forward to create new opportunities for some incredible kids.

The Impact of Hair Donations

Thanks to support from both hair and financial donors, we helped more than 1,000 kids in 2025 receive free wigs, and we’re on track to help even more children in 2026!

Start a fundraising eventin your community, inspire others to grow and give, and help us reach even more kids this year!

Every contribution, whether hair or funds, helps make a difference in the lives of children who deserve confidence and comfort.
