A Shared Journey of Giving: Aileen and Ilyas Donate Their Hair to Wigs For Kids

April 15, 2026

One Family, Two Donations, Endless Impact

At Wigs For Kids, every hair donation tells a story of generosity, compassion, and hope. Today, we are honored to share the story of a mother and son whose decision to donate together turned a moment of change into a meaningful act of kindness.

Meet Aileen and her son Ilyas (pronounced like Elias), a joyful, curious 7‑year‑old living in Columbus, Ohio with their family: dad Bernard, baby sister Orion, and their beloved rescue dog Capo, an Australian kelpie mix who recently turned 14. What began as a haircut became a powerful lesson in empathy, intention, and helping others.

Hair Grown With Purpose

Aileen and Ilyas are both blessed with long, thick hair — hair they’ve learned to care for and cherish. For Aileen, growing her hair long and donating it has been part of her life for many years. Her last donation cut was in 2022.

When Ilyas was born in 2018, Aileen and her husband Bernard made a special decision: they would let his hair grow and only cut it when he was ready to choose. Aileen shared, “The first time he decided to cut it was when he was 3, but other than that, he decided to keep his hair long. He has this amazing curly hair that grows like a lion’s mane. I learned to comb, style and braid his hair in lots of different ways ever since he was a toddler. Sometimes he has lots of braids, other times, he likes ponytails and buns.”

Ilyas decided on his first haircut at age three, but after that, he chose to keep his hair long — until this past year, when he felt ready for a big change.

Learning Why Giving Matters

As Ilyas talked about cutting his hair, Aileen gently suggested donating it — an idea that sparked curiosity. Aileen’s was also ready for a cut, as her hair had grown so long, she sometimes sat on it! Together, they researched hair donation organizations, learning why people give their hair and how it helps children who experience hair loss due to medical conditions like alopecia, lupus, and trichotillomania, or from pediatric cancer treatments.

When Ilyas realized that some kids don’t have hair at allthrough no choice of their own — he was deeply moved. That realization made his decision clear. He wanted to donate his hair, and he loved the idea that he and his mom could do it together.

A Big Chop, Side by Side

Once the decision was made, there was no hesitation. Aileen cut Ilyas’s hair herself right in their living room — about 16 inches — before taking him to his very first barbershop appointment. The following week, Aileen visited a local salon where she donated approximately 21 inches of her own hair.

Ilyas proudly helped pack the hair into the envelope and mail it to Wigs For Kids, completing a donation that came not just from their heads, but from their hearts.

Meet Ilyas

Ilyas is a bright, imaginative first grader at the Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, where he’s learning to be bilingual, and teaching his family along the way. He loves dinosaurs, Hot Wheels, encyclopedias, Pokémon, and building with Magnatiles and Lego. His interests also include piano, basketball, video games, and chess.

Most of all, Ilyas is a loving big brother to his 1‑year‑old sister Orion, always encouraging her to play, laugh, and be a little silly. He has a great sense of humor, loves telling jokes, and even created a drawing at school about donating his hair—showing just how proud he is of his decision.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Donors

Aileen and Ilyas hope that by sharing their story, they inspire others, especially families, to consider hair donation as a meaningful way to help children experiencing medical hair loss.

Their journey is a reminder that generosity isn’t about age, length, or experience. It’s about empathy, choice, and the willingness to help another child feel like themselves again.

From all of us at Wigs For Kids, thank you, Aileen and Ilyas, for your incredible kindness and for sharing your story with our community.

Your Support Matters

While hair donations like these make confidence-boosting hairpieces possible, financial contributions are equally critical. Monetary donations help fund the meticulous creation of each hairpiece, cover materials and production costs, and ensure that children receive their hairpiece at no cost to their families. For many children facing medical hair loss, this support provides comfort, confidence, and a sense of normalcy when they need it most.

By choosing to give, whether through hair, financial support, or both, you help ensure that more children get to experience hope, joy, and confidence.

At Wigs For Kids, we are honored to witness stories like this — where caring individuals come forward to create new opportunities for some incredible kids.
