19-year-old Kari understands better than most that hair can mean so much more than simple appearance.
“Hair is tied to identity, memories, confidence, and self-expression,” Kari shared. “It may seem superficial to some, but it plays a meaningful role in how we see ourselves and how we connect with others.”
When she was just 14 years old, Kari was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy treatments. Like many children facing serious medical challenges, she experienced hair loss during her journey. At a time in life when fitting in and feeling normal meant everything, looking in the mirror and not recognizing herself was incredibly difficult.

During treatment, Kari received a real-hair wig through a charitable organization. That gift became much more than hair.
“It gave me something I didn’t realize I needed so deeply — a sense of normalcy,” she explained. “It helped me show up each day with a little more strength and confidence.”

Now, five years into remission, Kari carries those memories with her every day. While she loves her long hair and recognizes the privilege of being able to grow it back, she never forgot how much that wig meant during one of the most challenging chapters of her life.
That gratitude inspired her to make a remarkable decision: donate her own hair so another child could experience the same comfort and confidence she once received. Supported by the people who stood beside her throughout her healing journey, Kari also chose to document her hair donation journey, to share her story with the children we serve.
“The beautiful vibes and warm feeling that the story contains,” she said. “I would’ve wanted to see something like this when I was going through chemotherapy.”

For the child who eventually receives a hairpiece made possible through donations like hers, Kari has one heartfelt wish:
“I hope that, for at least a second, the self-confidence and feeling of identity returns. I pray for a little bit of themselves back.”
And for anyone considering a hair donation of their own, her message is simple:
“If you have the privilege and luxury to grow out natural hair and are already thinking of cutting it, why not help make a little soul’s life journey a little bit easier?”
Kari’s story is a beautiful reminder that healing can come full circle. What once helped restore her confidence is now becoming a gift of hope for another child.
While hair donations like this make confidence-boosting hairpieces possible, financial contributions are equally critical. Monetary donations help fund the meticulous creation of each hairpiece, cover materials and production costs, and ensure that children receive their hairpiece at no cost to their families. For many children facing medical hair loss, this support provides comfort, confidence, and a sense of normalcy when they need it most.
By choosing to give, whether through hair, financial support, or both, you help ensure that more children get to experience hope, joy, and confidence.
At Wigs For Kids, we are honored to witness stories like this — where caring individuals come forward to create new opportunities for some incredible kids.
Thanks to support from both hair and financial donors, we helped more than 1,000 kids in 2025 receive free wigs, and we’re on track to help even more children in 2026!
