WATCH: A Gift of Love in Memory of Her Dad: Sofia’s Hair Donation Story

November 5, 2026

Sometimes, a small observation can lead to a big act of kindness.

When Sofia attended a K-pop concert with her mom, Jennifer, she noticed a young girl in the crowd who had no hair. Curious, Sofia asked why the little girl didn’t have hair. Her mom explained that sometimes children lose their hair because they are sick or receiving medicine that causes it to fall out.

The conversation brought back a difficult memory for Sofia. In January 2023, her father, Felipe was diagnosed with cancer. As he underwent chemotherapy treatments, Sofia watched him lose his hair. Tragically, Felipe passed away in April 2023.

Remembering her dad, Sofia immediately responded with compassion.

“I’ll give her my hair.”

Jennifer explained that while they didn’t know the little girl personally, Sofia could donate her hair to help a child experiencing hair loss. Sofia’s face lit up with a smile, and she eagerly agreed.

Not long after, the family booked an appointment with stylist Alexandra Pelayo of Viva Bouncy and Bliss Salon. Stylist Alex volunteers her time with Wigs For Kids both as a Hair Donation Specialist, harvesting ponytails for donation, and as a Certified Service Provider, working directly with recipient families on the creation and maintenance of their hairpieces. Volunteer stylists are vital to our mission, ensuring all donations meet our requirements so they can be hand-tied into the hairpieces we gift to our families.

Stylists like Alex understand that gifts like Sofia’s are so much more than just hair. Donations like hers give other kids the opportunity to feel more confident and comfortable during a difficult time. And to make the moment even sweeter, Sofia has already said she wants to grow her hair out again so she can donate once more.

Educational text explains that hair loss can change self-image and that Wigs For Kids helps restore confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of self. An inset image shows the child wearing a custom hair replacement system and smiling at the camera.

“Sofia was so happy to be able to donate her hair,” Jennifer shared. “I am so proud of how selfless and brave my child is when it comes to helping another child in need. My hope is that her story will inspire other children to be brave and selfless just like her.”

Sofia’s donation is especially meaningful because it honors the memory of her father, Felipe. Through her gift, his legacy of love continues to make a difference in the life of another child.

Hair donations like Sofia’s are at the heart of the Wigs For Kids mission. Every strand donated by generous children, teens, and adults helps create high-quality hair replacement systems for children experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment, alopecia, burns, and other medical conditions. Each year, Wigs For Kids serves hundreds of families across the country, and every hairpiece is provided completely free of charge to the children and families we support.

We are incredibly grateful to Sofia for her generosity and to Jennifer for sharing this touching story. Acts of compassion like Sofia’s remind us that no matter your age, you have the power to make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.

Thank you, Sofia, for sharing your beautiful heart and helping another child smile. ❤️

Your Support Matters

While hair donations like these make confidence-boosting hairpieces possible, financial contributions are equally critical. Monetary donations help fund the meticulous creation of each hairpiece, cover materials and production costs, and ensure that children receive their hairpiece at no cost to their families. For many children facing medical hair loss, this support provides comfort, confidence, and a sense of normalcy when they need it most.

By choosing to give, whether through hair, financial support, or both, you help ensure that more children get to experience hope, joy, and confidence.

At Wigs For Kids, we are honored to witness stories like this — where caring individuals come forward to create new opportunities for some incredible kids.
