A Mother’s Heart, A Stylist’s Purpose: Meet Wigs For Kids Volunteer Stylist Joscelyn Laurence

Stylist Spotlight: Joscelyn Laurence

Near San Antonio, Texas, stylist Joscelyn Laurence runs Outside The Lines Salon, a space she opened in 2012 to balance her passion for hairstyling with her dedication to motherhood. True to its name, nothing about her salon is cookie-cutter — every service reflects her client’s lifestyle, budget, and confidence at home. Joscelyn ensures that each person who sits in her chair leaves with the techniques, tools, and self-assurance they need to maintain their new style.

A few years into her salon journey, tragedy reshaped her life. Joscelyn’s son, River, passed away due to complications from cancer treatments. In his memory, she committed herself to supporting other children fighting similar battles. She has even shaved her head multiple times to raise awareness for pediatric cancer — a heartfelt symbol of solidarity and love.

Sharing Her Gifts Through Wigs For Kids

In 2022, Joscelyn expanded her mission by becoming a Wigs For Kids Hair Donation Specialist (HDS). In this role, she collects ponytail donations that will be transformed into custom hairpieces for children experiencing hair loss — completely free for their families.

At the time she shared on her Facebook page, “I am happy to announce I am now a Hair Donation Specialist with Wigs For Kids! My own child never needed a wig, but I have friends who did use their services. I feel very strongly for this organization and I’m happy to be part of their team.”

Soon, hair donors began filling her chair, including RJ, a friend of Joscelyn’s son River, who grew and donated his hair in River’s honor.

Joscelyn loves asking donors about their motivation. Some have a personal connection to alopecia or cancer. Others simply say, “Why not?” No matter the reason, each donation reminds her of the kindness that still exists in the world.

I love transformations so much.

Even the seemingly simple ones. Thank you so much for your donation, I know the recipient will be so appreciative!

It was an honor being part of the process!

Serving Our Recipient Families

After a year of collecting hair donations, Joscelyn felt called to do even more. In 2023, she joined our Certified Stylist Program (CSP), where she now works directly with recipient families. She helps take head measurements, guides children through selecting their preferred length and color, and ensures each hairpiece fits and feels natural.

This hands-on experience made her donation cuts even more meaningful. Now she could see how each ponytail lovingly given becomes a source of renewed confidence for a child facing hair loss.

Joscelyn shared on her Facebook page, “I love doing these haircuts, and now that I’m doing the measuring for wig recipients it’s even more rewarding! [I helped] my little friend with her new wig a couple weeks ago, and I still smile when I think about how happy it made her.”

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve done in my career, to be able to give her back some normalcy when her life was turned upside down.

A Transformation That Bloomed

As meaningful as the work is for Joscelyn, the impact is even greater for the children served. Her second recipient child, Lucia, first visited Joscelyn in the midst of her cancer battle. The weight of the journey was visible on Lucia and her family. But once her custom hairpiece was ready for styling, everything changed.

Joscelyn shared, “When I put the wig on her, even before I cut the fringe, you could see the difference. She was more talkative, happier, it’s like I watched her BLOOM right in my chair.”

Lucia’s mother, Cristina, described the moment, “The styling experience was amazing for my daughter Lucia. The stylist Joscelyn was just as excited as we were for Lucia to try on her wig. Lucia requested to personalize the wig with cute bangs. As soon as we got in the car she told me, ‘Wow mom I can finally feel like myself again‘ and requested if we could go eat at her favorite restaurant. I could just see how much confidence she gained and how excited she was to feel like herself again. It was certainly a great feeling for a girl that has missed out on so much during her months long cancer battle.”

Why Stylists Matter So Much

Every day, Wigs For Kids relies on generous, compassionate stylists like Joscelyn. Whether they’re performing donation cuts or working directly with recipient families, stylists provide the time, talent, and expertise needed to help restore confidence in children experiencing hair loss.

Each year, more families apply for our services, which are always provided at no cost. This means our need for hair donationsfinancial donations, and stylists also continues to grow.

Wigs For Kids offers free training materials for any stylist interested in joining our mission. Ask your favorite stylist if they’d like to help kids in need!

“I enjoy doing the donation cuts, but I never could have imagined how much THIS part — helping recipients — fills my cup. Services like this won’t make you rich, but they will feed your soul.”
