Aurora, affectionately referred to as “Bean” by her mom, Jennifer, began losing her hair when she was just 18 months old. For most of her life, being bald has simply been part of who she is. While Aurora has grown comfortable in her own skin, the world around her often still has questions.
When she goes out in public, Aurora is no stranger to curious stares, whispered conversations, or assumptions about her health. Many people automatically believe that a child without hair must be sick or undergoing cancer treatment, but Aurora’s story reminds us that appearances rarely paint the full picture.
Aurora is starting 4th grade this year, loves gymnastics and playing Roblox. She’s happy, healthy, and energetic, and doesn’t mind sharing her hair loss journey. In fact, she would much rather have people ask respectful questions than make assumptions. Her family believes that understanding begins with conversation and awareness can help replace discomfort with compassion.
Aurora lives with Alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. It is not contagious, and it can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. For some people, hair may regrow; for others, hair loss may be long term. Every experience with alopecia is unique.
While alopecia is often viewed as a cosmetic condition, its impact can reach far beyond appearance. Children and adults living with hair loss may navigate social challenges, unwanted attention, and emotional hurdles that others never see. This is why awareness matters so much.
Through it all, Aurora continues to show the world what true confidence looks like. Whether or not Aurora chooses to wear hair does not define her. Her smile and vibrant personality shine brighter than any hairstyle ever could. While Aurora’s confidence was never dependent on having hair, Wigs For Kids gave her something equally important: choice. Now, she has the option to wear hair whenever she wants, on her own terms.
Through our Recipient Program, Aurora and her family applied for and received a free-of-charge hairpiece, so she could have hair to wear whenever she wanted. These hairpieces are created from ponytail donations offered by generous donors around the world, harvested with care by professional stylists, and funded by donations made by caring supporters.
The family was paired with George Werba, professional stylist and co-owner of Capretti & Company. In their first meeting, George took measurements for Aurora’s hairpiece, and together they selected the length and color for her tailor-made creation. A few months later, Aurora returned to the salon for final styling on her hairpiece. The experience was more than just receiving a hairpiece: it was about feeling seen, supported, and celebrated.
After Aurora’s appointment, her mom shared a moment she dreamed about for years: styling her daughter’s hair.
Special moments like this are why Wigs For Kids was founded in 1981 and continues to this day. By providing free-of-charge hairpieces to families dealing with pediatric hair loss, kids can live their lives with the confidence to be who they are, and families can share tender moments with bows and ribbons.
Alopecia may be part of Aurora’s story, but there is so much yet to be written. As she begins fourth grade and looks ahead to all the adventures still to come, Wigs For Kids is honored to be part of her journey, providing support, encouragement, and up to one no-cost hairpiece each year along the way.
Stories like Aurora’s are only possible because of a community who believes no child should face hair loss alone.
