Austin’s Story: Turning Adversity into Purpose

April 22, 2026

Meet Austin

At just 15 years old, Austin has already shown extraordinary resilience, generosity, and heart.

Austin became a burn survivor before he even started kindergarten. After a lengthy hospital stay, multiple surgeries, and years of ongoing medical care, the extent of his injuries meant that only about one-quarter of his natural hair could be saved. This is a permanent condition, one that could impact his confidence and self-esteem as he grew up.

Through that journey, Austin and his family connected with Wigs For Kids, opening the door to something that would not only change Austin’s life, but the lives of many other children as well.

Over the years, Austin has received several made-to-order hairpieces from Wigs For Kids, and always at no cost to his family. His Certified Service Provider (CSP) throughout this journey has been none other than our Founder, Jeffrey Paul! CSPs are professional stylists who volunteer their time and talents to guide families through the process of ordering, styling, and maintaining each hairpiece.

Recipients like Austin are eligible to receive a new wig each year, completely free-of-charge to the family, allowing him to express his individual style with a new look each year. This opportunity provides kids like Austin the power to choose how they present themselves to the world, which can restore confidence, comfort, and a sense of normalcy that every child deserves.

From Recipient to Advocate

Austin’s experience with Jeffrey and Wigs For Kids inspired the creation of Walleye For Kids, an annual fishing tournament that began in 2017 and donates 100% of its proceeds to Wigs For Kids. The event was created because of Austin, and continues to this day because of his passion for giving back.

As an outdoor enthusiast who especially enjoys fishing, Austin doesn’t just participate — he leads. Each year, he forms his own fishing team for the tournament and actively helps behind the scenes, assisting with event preparation, like typing and printing rules and waiver forms. His dedication reflects a maturity beyond his years, and a deep commitment to helping other children who face medical hair loss.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Austin’s journey is a powerful reminder of why Wigs For Kids exists. What began as support for a young child navigating the effect of a serious injury has grown into an annual event that helps provide hairpieces to children in need — at no cost to their families.

We are honored to be part of Austin’s story and are deeply grateful for the compassion, leadership, and purpose he continues to share with others.

Thank you, Austin, for turning your journey into hope for so many children.
