Kentucky Teacher’s Hair Donation Inspires 3rd Grade Class

May 9, 2018

Kaitlin Bernert added a unique school project to her school year. Knowing that she was going to cut and donate her hair, she involved the 3rd grade class at her school to help lead the project. Learn how Kaitlin educated and inspired her students and co-workers.

Here’s How Kaitlin Inspired Her Students to Donate Hair

I’ve been growing my hair out to donate it anyway, but I decided to make it a school project after my students mentioned that they had seen some old photos of me when I used to have short hair. I mentioned that I wanted to cut my hair and they flipped out because they’re  used to me with long hair. I started to explain that I wanted to donate it and it was a new concept for them, so I decided to turn it into a project so they could learn more about it. I shared the idea with my co-workers and we decided to get our whole grade involved. I knew I wanted the final day of the project to be me getting my hair cut in front of the students, but they also needed to be involved since it was a service learning project. We contacted Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and asked them if they could come talk about medical hair loss and if there was any way the students could help out those patients. They suggested we collect toys for their activity rooms and clinics. A rep from the children’s hospital came to the event to talk to the kids and to collect the toys.

We kicked the week off by watching your video,  From My Head to Hers, after which the kids got really interested and excited.  They spent the next 2 days looking at the Wigs for Kids website,  Pantene Beautiful Lengths, and Locks of Love. They had to find specific information about each one. After completing their research, they voted on the organization I should send my hair to and they chose you. They gave reasons for selecting Wigs for Kids such as:”They help kids” “they help kids feel like normal kids” and “they help kids feel beautiful.”

The hairdresser of a co-worker agreed to come to school to cut my hair. I cut about 14 inches off the back. The kids loved the event and several wanted to donate after learning about it. We plan to do the event again next year!
