Alaina, a high school student, has dealt with trichotillomania for the past three years. This is a condition that causes one to pull their hair out. Her mother stated, “Wigs for Kids made a difference helping Alaina to look her best with a wig, even though things were still happening underneath it and inside her mind.”
Her mother shared that Alaina’s medical practitioner from Charlotte Pediatrics has supported her throughout the process, both in the journey and in the wig application process, doing whatever was required to help her. Alaina has also sought counseling to help her with this condition. After a few years of counseling, Alaina feels she is in a better place. At the start of the school year she has resumed her very active school life.
Alaina shared, “My counselor helped me realize that even though I was struggling, I had people around me that wanted to help me through this time in my life. She was able to help me get to the place of content that I am now with owning my struggles rather than being embarrassed about them like I was when I first started to see her.”
It is these medical and mental health providers that provide the necessary support to children and young adults experiencing hair loss. We are very grateful for their service and the support they provide.
