In receiving hair donations from all over the world, we love hearing the unique “why” behind each individual’s choice to give. A donation to Wigs For Kids makes an immense difference in the life of a child who is struggling with hair loss, and today, we’re thrilled to share with you how one supporter turned her own gratitude into action.
From donor, Shannon Pestana in her own words:
I woke up one day feeling grateful for my hair and my health. This thought led me to make the decision to cut my hair. I wanted to help make a difference in a child’s life – to help them feel accepted by society—I can’t imagine losing my hair as a child due to a disease out of my control.
Although I’ve had many people tell me I am brave for shaving my head, it is the children who wake up every day still willing to fight that are brave. If we have the ability to spread kindness, compassion, love and goodness in this world, I feel we need to jump at the opportunity.
My decision to cut my hair was to raise awareness for children suffering from cancer and other illnesses. My hope is to remind people to not take life for granted and out of that gratitude, give to those who need it most.
After shaving my head, I feel liberated, joyous and grateful. I am so happy that I was able to help make a difference in a child’s life and help them feel happy, proud and confident.
Thank you for your time and sharing my story. -Shannon Pestana
