Dear Wigs for Kids:
A few years ago, my six-year old grandson Marcus was dying from cancer. He was invited to spend a few days at Disney World by the GIVE KIDS THE WORLD FOUNDATION. Family members were included in the invitation, and I was lucky enough to go along. We were housed in a beautiful village with individual living quarters and communal recreation and dining areas. I was impressed by the courage shown by these kids. Although many were in pain, and all were quite aware of their situation, they behaved like any children would on a trip to Disney World.
One thing stood out in my mind and brought tears to my eyes: the little girls. Most boys can go around bald with no concern, perhaps a little macho, but little girls are devastated. To see them try in every way to cover their heads was heartbreaking.
I’m 65 and have worn my hair in a long pigtail for years. I saw a news article about your organization and there it was…my hair belonged somewhere else.
Marcus left us, but his presence is always there. I can hear him saying…”cool, Papa.”
