Michael's Story

Dear Jeffrey Paul:

About 15 years ago you helped a six-year old boy who was going through radiation and chemotherapy because of leukemia. Mike got leukemia when he was four and did fine until the age of six when he went out of remission. He underwent a big series of radiation treatments. He lost his hair, was extremely ill, and doctors told us if he lived he may not ever have children.

We, as his parents, weren’t concerned about him having children at that time since all we were concerned about was saving this beautiful boy’s life. After he lost his hair, he was withdrawn and shy and not like himself at all. Our hospital always set the family up with a social worker to help you (the family) through the tough times. She suggested we take Mike to your salon. She said you supplied wigs for children with cancer.

We brought our most recent picture of Mike, and you made him a wonderful wig and styled it just like if it was his own hair. At the moment you put that wig on him, you gave our little guy his personality back. Then you never even charged us a penny. I knew right then and there that you were giving him a “gift from the heart.” I wrote to you a couple of times since then to tell you how he was doing.

Now I want to update you on the latest. Our son has been cancer free since his last bout when he was six. I don’t take anything for granted so I thank the good Lord every day. He has gotten married to a wonderful gal and they have the most beautiful little girl. What a miracle considering all the invasive treatments that he had done to his body. So when you get a scared mom and dad that comes into your salon and you are styling a wig that you donated to this terrified family, please tell them of a story of another mom and day who was scared out of their wits of loosing a child they most dearly loved by a horrible, unthinkable disease that attacks innocent children.

Our road was long and tough, our doctor was wonderful, our social worker was the best and our God is good. We met a lot of nice people on our journey, one which I never want to repeat. You were one of those people on our journey that helped make our likes at that time a little easier. I want to thank you for that.

Enclosed is a picture of our son with his daughter. I hope you enjoy it as much as my husband and I do. Maybe our son won’t be someone who saves the world by being a scientist or a miracle doctor or finds the cure for cancer, but maybe one of his kids or grandkids will. Again, our God is good.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. (One of the good parts). My family will never forget you and all the kind blessings you gave us.

Have a Merry Christmas and a wonder New Year ahead.

Most Sincerely,

Mary

P.S. God bless!
